On lumpers and splitters, or the nosology of genetic disease.

چکیده
As Knut Faber pointed out in his Nosography,l mendelism contributed much to nosology by focusing attention on specific entities. Bacteriology, with its similar emphasis on specific etiology and specific entities, had a comparable effect. One need only recall that a century ago, symptoms such as jaundice, dropsy and anemia were viewed as entities, in much of medicine at least, to realize the nosologic contributions of mendelism and bacteriology. But the main object here is to review some contemporary problems in the nosology of genetic disease.

متن کاملIs Anxiety Best Conceived as a Unitary Condition? The Benefits of Lumping Compared With Splitting . . .
T here has been a growing tendency in psychiatric nosology toward increasing specificity of diagnostic syndromes, reflecting an underlying common belief that division of conditions into more homogenous groups will assist in our efforts to better determine the underlying neurobiology, specific conceptualization, and thereby treatment course of these differing disorders. This has been exemplified...

The classic renaming protocol of Moir and Anderson [4] uses a network of Θ(n) splitters to assign unique names to n processes with unbounded initial names. We show how to reduce this bound to Θ(n) splitters.

How useful are hereditary cancer susceptibility syndromes for modeling sporadic cancers? If the biology of cancers developing within hereditary syndromes follows the same pathways to malignancy as does a substantial proportion of sporadic cancers, then prevention trials focused on hereditary high-risk individuals can lead to important gains in the sporadic setting. McKusick struggled with this ...
